World Teachers’ Day 2013 Celebrated in Ambo university PDF Print E-mail

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated every year all over the world to commemorate the signing in 1966 of the UNESCO /ILO Recommendation concerning the status of Teachers. It is also celebrated to commemorate the 1997 recommendation concerning Higher Education Teaching personnel. The main purpose of the celebration is therefore to make aware of the recommendations to the teaching professionals and to the wider public.

It is repeatedly said that teachers are crucial to provision of education. But problem of quality education is becoming a common agenda in all nations. As a result the present complex situation of education system in a globalized world requires qualified and motivated teachers.

Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) Convenes its Congress every four years up on which policy of the association is evaluated and revised and /or election of the executive committee is held. So as to introduce the newly elected members of the ETA executive committee and based on the decision of the Ethiopian Teachers Association yearly Council held in Oromia region in shashemane town form 19-20 September 2013, ETA requested the Prime Minister to have a talk on pertinent issues of teachers, education and overall development priority agenda of the country. Accordingly, members of the executive committee at headquarters had a discussion on modality of providing housing for teachers, creating better working conditions for teachers, on good governance and peaceful learning environment.

Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA), as clearly stipulated in its articles of association, works for provision of quality education. For this purpose the association has been organizing various workshops, trainings and short term seminars.

Ethiopia has relatively addressed equity and accessibility issues while quality is a huge challenge which every stakeholder is expected to contribute to minimize the problem.

Due to this, ETA is doing its level best organizationally as well as in mobilizing teachers in addressing the quality problem.

Invited by its international affiliate, Education International (EI) which is the largest global teachers union federation, Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) has participated in the 102nd international labor conference (ILC) held from 5-20 June 2013 in Genera represented by its president.

The conference has discussed on verities of issues extending from report of the Director General to hearing individual cases of implementations of conventions and recommendations, job creation for the youth, creating better working conditions for citizens in each individual countries, etc.

Ethiopian Teachers Association (ETA) was a founding member of Education International (EI) in 1993 which was formed by amalgamation of  the then two largest organizations, namely the World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP) and the International Federation of Free Teacher’s Union (IFFTU), representing unions and associations of teachers and education support staff in the world.
